Já se deparou com a expressão "go figure"? E com "it figures"? Então segue uma breve explicação destas e outras expressões com a palavra "figure".
1) Go figure
normalmente significa "vai saber/quem entende/é estranho".
Exemplos:
a) John has always dreamt about buying a new car. Now that he can afford it, he says he doesn't want it anymore. Go figure!
b) All Anna did was talk nonstop about her new boyfriend a month ago. Now when we ask her about him, she changes the subject. Go figure!
2) It figures
significa "faz sentido/é explicável/ não é surpresa nenhuma".
Exemplos:
a) Amy was the one who got the promotion. It figures, as she is a very dedicated and hard-working employee.
b) A: Who broke the window?
B: It was Bob.
A: It figures. He's always so clumsy.
3) five figure salary
se uma pessoa tem um "5 figure salary", significa que ela ganha um salário com 5 dígitos, por exemplo 10,000. Da mesma forma, um "six figure salary" contém 6 dígitos, e assim por diante.
Exemplo:
His salary is in 6 figures, but he doesn't tell us exactly how much he earns.
4) to put a figure on something
significa dizer exatamente quanto alguma coisa custa ou vale.
Exemplo:
I know that this exotic crystal mirror costs a lot, but I can't put a figure on it.
5) to figure something out
significa "resolver um problema/ achar a solução / entender".
Exemplos:
a) Now I've figured out why Hannah was so angry this morning. She met her ex in the elevator.
b) I'll give you this map and some instructions. I hope you can figure out how to locate the building.
c) Don't worry about us: we have all figured out. We'll split into teams and look for the missing object.
