Would rather significa 'preferir'. Exemplos:
1) I'd rather die than vote for a certain woman candidate!
2) Would you rather go to Paris or New York? (Prefere ir a Paris ou Nova York?)
3) I think John would rather travel alone than with his friends.
4) I would rather not know how to write and have something to say than know how to write and have nothing to say.
(Enrique Tessieri, fonte: www.quotationspage.com)
Exemplos:
1) I prefer reading than watching TV. (Prefiro ler a ver televisão).
2) Susan prefers staying longer at work than arriving there early in the
morning.
Exemplos:
1) I had better start working on my project or I won't have time to finish it.
2) John had better study or he'll fail his math test.
3) You had better not start telling everybody about your winning the lottery.
Pode-se usar 'had better' para ameaçar alguém: 'You'd better keep this conversation between us.'
